High Peak Indoor Bowling Association

The sport of bowling in Derbyshire is traditionally played on the grass surface of outdoor crown greens during the summer. Teams from the towns and villages of the High Peak compete in several local leagues: Buxton & District, Longdendale, Matlock & District, North Derbyshire and Stockport & District.

Bowling in the winter on indoor mats is increasing in popularity. In 2008 the Association acquired National Lottery funding to "upgrade equipment and coaching in order to improve members' skills and facilitate greater participation from the wider community".

The Association has twenty four teams in two leagues playing on Friday evenings (6:00pm & 8:00pm) and Saturday mornings (9:15am & 11:15am). Teams of four, each player with two bowls, compete on three separate long mats in the sports hall at the Chapel Leisure Centre, Chapel-en-le-Frith.

The playing surface is protected by the use of indoor shoes.
Players use their own bowls or the narrow biassed size 3H provided in-house.
At the end of play on Saturday each mat is rolled onto a core, mounted on trolleys and moved to the equipment store.
